The induction technique of the IFF GmbH can also be used as an excitation source for a non-destructive component test by means of active thermography. The eddy currents generated during inductive excitation of components are used to detect faults such as cracks or blowholes. At these defects, the propagation of the eddy currents is disturbed, This leads to a locally temperature difference, which can be made visible by means of an infrared camera. Working with transmission arrangement, the inductor is located on one component side and the thermal camera on the other component side (left image); in the case of the reflection arrangement which is preferred but much more difficult to implement for reasons of accessibility, the IR camera and inductor are located on the same component side (right picture).
